Alcobaça’s Historic Center

Public Competition
Public Space | 18.000m²
Alcobaça

The premise of the competition, From the Monastery to the Castle – Accessibility and New Mobility, concerns the connection between two key points which, due to their diametrically opposite positions in both direction and elevation, encompass what may be considered the historic centre of Alcobaça.

It became clear that, beyond linking these two points, the competition is an exercise in the logic, identity and ambitions of Alcobaça’s historic centre. Intervening in this urban fabric requires careful analysis of the elements that compose it, their origins and what they represent for the city. This intervention is the cornerstone of the necessary ambition and the catalyst for urban regeneration and development through the re-establishment of a clear identity for the public realm.

The aim is to establish a direct dialogue with what already exists, ensuring a unified identity for the public space, promoting continuity of experience, and at the same time responding appropriately to the preliminary programme at specific moments.

Ultimately, the concept underpinning this proposal is one of clarity and identity in the public realm of Alcobaça’s historic centre.
